Friday 29th September – Springwest Scholars trip to Somerville College, Oxford. Written by Yasmine Parton, Year 10.

On Friday 29th September, we visited Somerville College at Oxford University. Whilst we were there we had a short talk with the outreach officer, who oversaw the introduction of other schools and students into the life of university. During this talk, we were informed about the pros and cons of university and the opportunities it gives. After this, we had a lesson on linguistics, which talked about the formation of words and how they are formed using various parts of the mouth. Shortly after this, we had lunch at the canteen and a brief tour around the university visiting the student accommodation and the library. Finally, we visited a Natural History Museum, where we experienced an interactive exhibit on fossils, taxidermy – and even life Madagascan Hissing Cockroaches – before returning back to school.
