Who was Mary Seacole?
Mary Seacole was a British-Jamaican nurse who set up the “British Hotel” behind the lines during the Crimean War. The hotel provided a comfortable place for sick and recovering soldiers.
Whilst nursing soldiers, Mary Seacole was described as ‘caring, skilful and brave’. She worked extremely hard to help as many soldiers as possible under difficult conditions with limited resources.
Head of House Introduction
As Head of House, I am excited to honour the legacy of Mary Seacole through the effort and achievements of members of this House.
Not only did Mary Seacole revolutionise nursing, showing care and kindness to injured servicemen during the Crimean war, she also battled injustice and refused to give in to others’ prejudices. In Seacole House, we aim to continue this legacy. Whether through academic pursuits, our commitment to our moral virtues or sporting participation, everyone in Seacole House seeks to honour the trail blazed by Mary Seacole and participate to the best of their ability, aiming themselves to be known as “caring, skilful and brave”.
In order for society to progress and for social justice to be achieved, we must understand the past and use it to shape the future. Members of Seacole House use Mary Seacole as this inspiration: we understand her struggle for equality and recognition and appreciate our responsibility to continue this struggle for all members of our community.
I am immensely proud to be Head of Seacole House and to help our students use the example of our namesake to achieve their true potential in all aspects of life.
