What Set You On The Path To Teaching?

From a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I really enjoyed my subjects at school, particularly Geography, and I knew that I wanted to get into a career that involved helping others. Being a secondary school teacher seemed like a good fit for me so I pursued Geography at GCSE, A Level and at university before joining the teaching profession. My teachers had such a positive impact on me at school, inspiring me to do my very best, and each day that I step into the classroom, I hope to do the same for our wonderful students.

What Was It That Attracted You To Working At Springwest Academy?

I came to visit the school before I joined and came away with a really positive feeling. I met lots of staff and students and was particularly impressed by how warmly they spoke about the school and how there is a real belief that every student can succeed, no matter their starting point. I instantly knew that this would be a place where I could continue to make a difference and that I could very quickly feel part of the community. I was certainly not wrong about that.

What do you enjoy about being a Vice Principal?

It is a real privilege to be able to help shape the direction of the school in this key role. One major aspect of being a Vice Principal is to ensure that students in our community achieve the best outcomes that enable them to have choices in the future. I am very passionate about this. No two days are the same and I enjoy helping students to overcome any challenges they may face so that when they open their exam results in the summer of their final year with us, they can gleam with pride.

What do you like most about teaching Geography?

My favourite topic in geography is tectonics, which is all about the structure of the earth and its geological hazards such as earthquakes and volcanoes. I love teaching this topic because not only does it help students to understand that our planet is immensely powerful and ever changing, but it also helps them to understand that people in other countries sometimes face significant challenges and that we have a moral duty to support our fellow global citizens where we can.
