Remote Education

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to students and their families about what to expect from our remote education experience.

If a student is absent for coronavirus-related reasons they will need to complete work at home if they are well enough. Teachers will set work in all subjects from no later than the second day of their absence and will expect them to complete their work remotely.

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

All students have access to Google Classroom through their school-based Google account. Students have a separate Google Classroom for each of their curriculum subjects. This allows teachers to communicate with pupils, giving access to resources and assignments for your child to undertake. Guidance on how to access Google Classroom can be found at the bottom of this page.

If you are a student and you have forgotten your password to log into your Google Classroom account, contact distance@springwestacademy.org and we will support.

Student-Guide-Connecting-to-Lessons-from-HomeIf my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home.  Should you have difficulty with access to a laptop, please contact your child’s Pastoral Mentor on the first day of coronavirus-related absence so that we can discuss how we can offer further support.

How will my child be taught remotely?

Students will be set remote learning tasks on Google Classroom.

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

It is expected that all students engage fully with our remote education offer if they are absent for coronavirus-related reasons and are well enough to complete their work. We know that this may provide challenges which is why communication between home and school is so important to us. By working together we can support each other to build success.

You can support your child by setting an expectation that they join in with the normal school day. This means providing consistent day and night times. Where possible provide a space in the home where they can work. It is useful if this is not in a ‘relaxation space’ so as to help your child distinguish between work and play.

Our pastoral staff will be in regular contact to support you with this so please use these calls as an opportunity to ask questions if you are having difficulties. Pastoral calls should normally take place once a week so please be ready to answer a call from school to discuss how your child is doing. It is important to note that this call is likely to come from a withheld number.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

All teachers will monitor the work submitted during the period of absence.

We will keep in regular contact with you during periods of remote education primarily through your child’s Pastoral Mentor.

If you have a concern about your child’s engagement then please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. Work set through Google Classroom will allow our staff to share marks and/or offer some comments and feedback where possible.

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some students, for example some with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those students in the following ways:

  • Students will be set tasks by their usual teachers meaning that teachers are aware of individual needs and will adapt teaching materials and strategies accordingly.
  • Some students with complex needs will have specialist staff contacting home where appropriate.
