What Set You On The Path To Teaching?

My love of dance. I studied dance at university and was lucky enough to have a stint dancing professionally after I finished my third year. It was during this time that I realised my passion was off the stage and not actually on it. I applied for a teacher training course that specialised in secondary dance education at university near where my parents lived and I was fortunate enough to get a place.

What Was It That Attracted You To Working At Springwest Academy?

I was already working in a nearby school and wanted to stay local. From the day I had my interview, I knew I wanted to work here. There was such a positive vibe around the school and the students were so interested to learn new things. I loved how inclusive the school was with the different centres, I had never experienced anything like that before. The biggest difference for me is coming from such a small school to one that was so huge! But all the staff were so welcoming and lovely that it didn’t take long for me to feel at home… and 15 years later I’m still here!

What do you enjoy about being an Assistant Principal?

I love my daily interactions with students across all the year groups. I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to engage with all aspects of school life, even the lunchtime duties on the playground when it is pouring with rain! I am really proud of our school and all we do within it and feel I am in such a fortunate position to share so many experiences with students and their families.

What do you like most about teaching?

It never ceases to amaze me how much our students are capable of. Teaching Character Education to year 7, 8 and 9 allows me to participate in the most intellectual conversations and debates, and I’m always learning new things from them! I love how actively Springwest students participate in lessons and their ability to question and probe for further information. My drama groups in year 10 and 11 are so talented and never cease to amaze me with their creativity. I look forward to one day seeing one of their names up in lights at a West End show.
